Behind the scenes

This text was born from a whirlwind-the swirl of dishes, aromas, clinking glasses, and the joyful excess that defines large gatherings in regions of France such as Burgundy or the South-West.

I had Rabelais and the humanists in mind: that conviction that life is better lived by savouring it rather than fearing it. The succession of courses creates a kind of joyful vertigo, a moment suspended in time where we choose optimism, where we celebrate what nourishes us-both literally and figuratively.

I wanted to write a hymn to those moments when we laugh too loudly, speak too quickly, and love without restraint, because, deep down, that is life too!

Echoes of the world

The accent of South-Western France has something lyrical about it-rounded on the tongue, almost gastronomic. The words themselves seem to simmer like a dish being gently reheated: Pomerol, Hermitage, entrecôte, fondant. They are spoken the way one lets a wine open up.

French has a unique richness when it comes to describing gastronomy and the art of the table. For centuries, it was the language of haute cuisine across Europe. English itself has adopted many of its terms: menu, chef, cuisine, restaurant, sommelier, hors d’œuvre.

Language itself becomes a feast.

And you, when was the last time you felt fully alive, if only for the duration of a meal?
