Behind the scenes

The inspiration for this text came during a summer spent in Stockholm, Sweden. In Nordic countries, the long summer days create the feeling that time refuses to stop: in June, daylight lingers late into the night, and energy seems endless.

This atmosphere made me think of adolescence – that fragile moment when we gradually leave behind the carefree nature of childhood and begin to discover a more serious, sometimes heavier, adult world.

I also thought about parents, who genuinely want the best for their children without always knowing how to express it in words their children can truly hear.

For this text, I placed myself in the mind of a teenager struggling to choose his path, torn between the caution his parents wish to pass on and his dream of becoming famous in the world of sports. At thirteen, some dreams seem impossible… and yet sometimes all it takes is belief and perseverance.

Echoes of the world

The title Valets stund literally means “the moment of choice.” The word val means “choice” in Swedish, but it can also refer to an election, reminding us that making a decision often means giving up other possibilities.

Swedish belongs to the Germanic language family, like English or German. Yet its sound is distinctive: the language has melodic pitch accents that give words an almost sing-song intonation. For example, in Stockholm, the voice rises and then gently falls, creating a subtle wave-like sound typical of Scandinavian languages.

With just over ten million inhabitants, Sweden is relatively small in population but highly present on the international stage. While writing this text, I had figures such as ABBA, Greta Thunberg, and the athlete Duplantis in mind.

And you, when faced with a difficult choice, do you prefer the safest path… or the one that makes your heart beat faster?
