Behind the scenes
The landscapes of Guilin and the Li River in China are famous for their limestone mountains rising from the water like silhouettes in the mist.
Depending on the light and the fog, their shapes seem to shift, leaving room for the imagination. It is this atmosphere, both wondrous and slightly uncanny, that I wanted to capture in this text.
The story is also inspired by a traditional practice: cormorant fishing, in which birds help fishermen catch fish.
The illustration suggests this suspended moment between mist, mountains, and river, where it becomes difficult to tell what is real… and what is imagined.

Echoes of the world
The Chinese title 奇妙的捕鱼 (qímiào de bǔyú) means “the wondrous catch.” The characters 奇妙 (qímiào), also featured in the illustration, evoke something marvelous, surprising, or mysterious.
The story takes place along the 漓江 (Lí Jiāng), the Li River. In Chinese, 江 (jiāng) refers to a large river. The landscapes of Guilin, where mountains rise from the water in the mist, are among the most iconic in China.
The text also refers to cormorant fishing, known as 鸬鹚捕鱼 (lúcí bǔyú), a traditional technique in which trained birds help fishermen catch fish.
And you, have you ever seen a landscape where mist completely transforms what you see?
